The surprising part isn’t that Kim Aldrich hears the positive comments about her services from clients all the time.

That’s perhaps only natural. As a board-certified lactation consultant, Aldrich helps families navigate the bumps in the road that can sometimes come with breast feeding a new baby.

What might be a little surprising, she said, is that the feedback comes from new dads almost as frequently as it does the moms.

“I usually encourage them to come with me to the consult,” said Aldrich, a registered nurse and Louisburg resident. “I can’t tell you how many times a dad has left and said ‘That’s the best $100 I ever spent.’”

For more than a decade, Aldrich has been providing counseling to new families through her business, Breastfed. Originally founded by a trio of lactation consultants, she took over the business for herself in 2002, after her partners opted to move on.

Since then, Aldrich has been offering her counseling services through the offices of the Women’s Health Care Group in both Overland Park and Lawrence. And after moving to Louisburg approximately a year ago, she hopes to provide the same quality of care to local moms and families as well.

Rather than open an office in Louisburg, Aldrich said, she wanted to spread word of Breastfed’s services locally. Her availability in town will extend to house calls; a service she said she wouldn’t be able to provide anywhere else.

“We moved here a year ago, and Louisburg is the only place I would consider doing a home visit, just because I feel safe there,” Aldrich said. “It’s a smaller community.”
But what help, exactly, does Breastfed provide new families? The driving concept is a simple one.

Studies have shown that the health benefits of breast feeding are numerous, Aldrich explained, ranging from promoting intelligence and allergy resistances in infants to providing defenses against the onset of cancer later in life.

While choosing to breast feed is the right choice, she added, the process is not always an effortless one. Aldrich herself breast-fed two children, and noted it was a struggle every step of the way.

Her own experiences were a big motivating factor in her decision to become certified as a lactation consultant.

“I remember not really enjoying the experience a lot,” she said. “And just having a really hard time with it.”

Breastfed aims to help families get through those rough patches. Clients can attend pre-natal classes designed to help families know what to expect, or set up individual consultations either in-person or via telephone. Additionally, Aldrich is able to offer quality breast feeding products to her clients at a discounted rate.

The goal isn’t to make money, she said, as Breastfed is operated in addition to her full-time job as a nurse and sonographer with the Women’s Health Care Group.
The goal is to help build healthy babies and, as a result, happy families
.

“Whatever support I can give to the Louisburg mommies and their families, I’d be more than happy to do,” Aldrich said.
